A Shade Colder will be present at the Miss Read Art Book Fair in Berlin next week from 22 to 24 September, presenting both the magazine as well as artist books from Estonia. The fair takes place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), one of the most notable cultural centres in Germany.
A Shade Colder will be presenting a special publication, created in time for the fair, titled Reversed Chronicles, featuring artists and art writers Agnė Jokšė, Sarah Nõmm, Vaim Sarv, Mia Tamme and Vlad(a). Texts in the publication use a contemporary and queer gaze to look at stories and traditions of the Eastern part of Europe, while also reflecting on questions of belonging. The publication also includes Sarah Nõmm’s artwork The Little Switch. Reversed Chronicles is edited by Keiu Krikmann and Kaarin Kivirähk and designed by Jojo&me (Johanna Ruukholm and Martina Gofman).
The fair is accompanied by a radio programme by Lumbung Radio, where contributors to Reversed Chronicles, artists Vaim Sarv and Mia Tamme will be hosting a show Oral Frictions and the Echo of an Otherwise.
In addition to A Shade Colder, Jaanus Samma’s, Kris Lemsalu’s and Katja Novitskova’s artist books as well as the reader Normal Noughts. Perspectives on Estonian Art of the 2000s, published by the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art will be available at the fair.
Miss Read is among the most prominent art book fairs in Europe. Miss Read continues exploration into Decolonizing Art Book Fairs and is committed to nurturing spaces and communities that take into consideration the richness and breadth of publishing from around the world. In this context, Miss Read 2023 will have a special focus on publishing practices from the East(s).
A Shade Colder is a magazine that aims to draw connections between art in Estonia and elsewhere in the world by highlighting shared stories, provide deeper analysis and also capture more short-lived occurrences. A Shade Colder strives to be a useful tool for working within and introducing the Eastern part of Europe internationally. Together with a variety of artists, writers, curators, designers, performers, architects and other creative minds, based both in Estonia and abroad, we aim to critically rethink how to speak about Estonian art on the local and international level. The magazine is published by the Estonian Centre for Contemporary Art.
A Shade Colder‘s participation at Miss Read is supported by the Estonian Ministry of Culture.
